![]() It reminds me directly of the moment-to-moment gameplay in BioShock, itself a very light immersive sim, and the game that served as my stepping stone into the genre. I’m only a few hours in, but I’m already very impressed by the toybox I’ve been given to play with. ![]() But there are ways to deal with them: stealth options, and some light hacking, either via heading to the ship’s security room or through some abilities that I’ve seen teased in the upgrade menu. There are also security systems to deal with: robotic turrets and cameras that make getting around quickly a giant pain in the butt. You start small, and soon build a goofy arsenal, and you’ll quickly figure out how to use enemy behaviors to your advantage: tourists, for example, explode on death, so getting them close to a few juveniles (short, annoying enemies) or janitors (stronger, taller humanoids) will help you out. You have severely limited resources with which to dispatch them, so you need to be smart about when you use stealth, when you shoot, and how you take them out. Populating these ships are wild enemies from a few base varieties, all of whom look like brightly colored 2D sprites straight out of the Doom era, and all of whom just want to make your job difficult. Nearly everything has a series of familiar sci-fi spaceship rooms like security, a helm (which usually contains a loot map), crew quarters, but each ship class also has some unique features, like the hospital ship’s operating theater or the big buffet halls of the luxury cruise ships. Every ship is randomly generated, but based on a specific “class” of vessel. Along the way, you’ll be looking for key parts to better your chances at living a little longer, and random junk that you can recycle into useful bits. What that means (besides that Void Bastards is satirizing the horrific practice of prison labor) is that you’ll choose a random ship to dock at from a star map, board it, and loot the crap out of it. Still, there’s certainly some fun to had in this loot-fueled space romp, it’s just very fleeting. The game puts you in the unfortunate spaceboots of a random prisoner conscripted to work as a sort of official space-looter for the WCG corporation. On top of that, its unrefined combat and its lackluster AI proves to be a further hindrance throughout. Whilst intriguing, initially exciting, and quite deep as far as its crafting goes, the game’s lack of play depth and environmental variation makes for a very repetitive trek overall. Void Bastards is a serviceable first-person shooter, at best. (note: the progress you’ve made will be retained from one to another) If a prisoner dies, another one takes over the journey and carries on. You can play a 12 to 15-hour campaign for an endless supply of prisoners, each having their own traits.Through the journey, keep on hunting for food, loots, fuel, and other resources to survive. Escape from space pirates and void whales, and if you can, avoid the hungry hermits along the way. Navigate your teeny tiny escape pod through the vast nebula.Use your hard-won supplies to improvise tools and weapons, from the distracting robo-kitty to the horribly unstable clusterflak.Make the correct decisions and take the rewards of survival. There is no room for errors in this game, for you are destined to die either way. Plan your mission ahead and make no mistake. Move carefully through the dangerous ships.Lead the misfit bastards of the Void Ark through the poor conditions of the spaceships and countless dangers of the Nebula!. ![]() You are supposed to die, but will you succumb to death easily, or will you be able to surpass all odds? ![]() This game is designed for you to be killed, so there’s that. Though you can test your aim, it does not mean you just point and shoot. Spoiler alert, this game does not allow you to think like a noob, the game wants you to play like a pro and make tactical decisions to survive. Inspired by classics (BioShock and System Shock 2 which are both action and shooting games), the game focuses mainly on planning your escape in the Sargasso Nebula while leading a rag-tag team of void bastards. Void Bastards just revolutionized the first-person shooting game genre. Remember when times were easier and you just aim and shoot to kill enemies? Well, forget about that.
